Our research network

The Fraunhofer IAIS innovation ecosystem

At the heart of a growing, closely networked innovation ecosystem, Fraunhofer IAIS conducts research on various topics related to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Both in institutionalized collaborations—often initiated and led by us – and in key research policy projects, we drive innovation forward together with renowned partners throughout Germany and internationally. The following is a selection of key initiatives from our research network.

Cutting-edge applied research "made by Fraunhofer"

Cross-sector AI expertise

The Fraunhofer Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Alliance comprises more than 30 institutes and is headquartered at Fraunhofer IAIS. Its mission is to support companies on their journey to becoming data-driven companies – from the implementation of data and AI strategies and the development of data protection-compliant systems to the training of specialists and managers.

Innovation with hybrid artificial intelligence

The Research and Innovation Center for Hybrid AI is one of eight Fraunhofer Heilbronn Research and Innovation Centers (HNFIZ) established with the support of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation. Together with Fraunhofer IAO, Fraunhofer IAIS is developing self-learning agents at the Center for Hybrid AI: from "human in the loop" to "agent in the loop".

Data processing: from the sensor to the cloud

The Fraunhofer Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Internet Technologies combines research on the topics of IoT-COMMs, data spaces, and machine learning. In the machine learning technology core, experts led by Fraunhofer IAIS research and develop processes for industry that enable transparent AI to be integrated into production, business, and sales processes.

Quantum AI Competence Center

In order to explore the potential of quantum computing, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft has established the Fraunhofer Competence Network Quantum Computing based on regional centers. The competence center in Sankt Augustin consists of the Fraunhofer Institutes IAIS and SCAI, with a focus on machine learning on quantum computers and quantum AI.

Innovation and transfer in North Rhine-Westphalia

Bonn: a centre of excellence

Fraunhofer IAIS and the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bonn cooperate closely in research and teaching, thereby promoting the expansion of Bonn as a center of excellence. Several joint professorships, including IAIS director Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel, Chair of Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems, strengthen this cooperation.

Making AI trustworthy in South Westphalia

Since May 2025, Prof. Dr. Dirk Hecker, deputy director of Fraunhofer IAIS, has been contributing his expertise in the fields of "generative AI" and "trustworthy AI" to research and teaching as professor of data analytics at the University of Siegen. The focus will be on responsible data analysis systems and AI applications, among others. Developments and research fields at Fraunhofer IAIS offer great potential for synergy in this area.

International AI talent from North Rhine-Westphalia

The Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it) is one of Europe's leading institutions for cutting-edge research and higher education in the field of computer science. Under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel, director of Fraunhofer IAIS, b-it is supported by the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen University, and the Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Competence platform for Artificial Intelligence

Under the leadership of Fraunhofer IAIS, KI.NRW is the central point of contact for artificial intelligence in North Rhine-Westphalia. The competence platform is developing the federal state into one of Germany's leading locations for applied AI. Its goals include transferring cutting-edge research into the industry and supporting companies on their journey into the world of AI.

International beacons for artificial intelligence

A new generation of AI

As one of Germany's central AI competence centers, the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence is shaping a new generation of AI that is powerful, sustainable, trustworthy, and secure, contributing to the solution of fundamental challenges in business and society. It is supported by Fraunhofer IAIS and Fraunhofer IML, as well as TU Dortmund University and the University of Bonn.

AI services, hardware, and expertise

Renowned scientific institutions have joined forces to form the WestAI service center in order to support business and research with AI services and infrastructures. Fraunhofer IAIS is one of the key partners in researching and providing multimodal AI applications.

AI testing and certification

MISSION KI – National Initiative for Artificial Intelligence and Data Economy is a partnership between leading German institutions in the field of AI testing and certification. Its goal is to develop and test AI quality and testing standards and, based on these, to establish a voluntary AI seal of approval.

Artificial intelligence "made in the EU"

Scientific excellence for an innovative “AI continent” Europe. In EU projects, Fraunhofer IAIS is researching large language models from the ground up. In projects such as "Deploy AI", "Trust LLM", "OpenEuroLLM", and "Jupiter AI Factory", it is working with renowned partners to help build infrastructure and service platforms and ensure the security and trustworthiness of artificial intelligence, thereby strengthening European digital sovereignty.
