Research on agentic AI

What are the advantages of agentic AI?

Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems that operate with a certain degree of autonomy, make decisions, and pursue goals without constant human supervision. Agentic AI systems are based on foundation models with reasoning and acting capabilities and model-driven specialized AI agents that are combined to form multi-agent systems.

Agentic AI can be integrated into complex environments, where it can replace or facilitate existing workflows. In short, agentic AI creates added value by enabling companies to let AI independently take on real-world tasks, making processes more efficient and responsive.

What are the main areas of research in the field of agentic AI?

Deploying autonomous AI agents in professional environments requires a high degree of reliability, transparency, and operational control. At Fraunhofer IAIS, our research focuses on bridging the gap between rapidly evolving scientific breakthroughs and the stringent demands of industrial applications. We design agentic systems that integrate seamlessly into complex enterprise architectures while strictly complying with data sovereignty, security, and regulatory standards.

Our research addresses the following core challenges:

  • Specialized reasoning: How can domain‑specific large language models be engineered to support structured reasoning, formal decision‑making, and knowledge‑intensive analysis in fields such as law, medicine, and engineering? We develop methods to enhance domain fidelity, logical coherence, and factual robustness so that agentic systems can handle complex, multi‑step tasks with verifiable accuracy.
  • Edge & sovereignty: How can we design agent systems that run on‑premise, at the edge, or in sovereign cloud environments to ensure privacy, reduce latency, and control inference costs? Our research explores decentralized architectures and secure execution environments that maintain full control of sensitive data while ensuring high‑performance agent behavior.
  • Reliable evaluation: How can we benchmark the performance, safety, and robustness of autonomous agents in dynamic, real‑world environments? We develop evaluation frameworks aligned with European standards and industrial requirements, enabling systematic assessment of long‑horizon reasoning, tool‑use patterns, risk profiles, and emergent behavior.
  • Enterprise MLOps: What are the optimal architectural frameworks for deploying, monitoring, and maintaining agentic systems in production? We design agent‑centric MLOps pipelines that ensure reproducibility, observability, and governance across the entire lifecycle. This includes data‑quality optimization for agent‑driven workflows and mechanisms for continuous adaptation and compliance.
  • Extended capabilities: How can agentic AI be expanded beyond classical task automation by integrating simulation environments, operations research, and physical AI systems? We investigate hybrid setups that enable scenario planning, real‑time optimization, and embodied intelligence, thus broadening the application space of agentic systems across industrial sectors.

Where can AI agents be used?

Public sectors

Automation of planning and approval procedures

Workflows in public sectors involve extensive information gathering, multi-level coordination, and structured legal argumentation.

→ We develop AI agents that retrieve and validate data, prepare assessments, and coordinate procedural steps. An important function is support in legal subsumption, in which AI agents relate facts to applicable standards, identify missing information, and prepare structured chains of argumentation for review by humans.

Healthcare

Decision support in acute situations

In trauma centers, medical teams must process vast amounts of information within seconds.

→ Together with our partners, we develop AI agents that monitor clinical dialogues live, interpret vital signs, and create a real-time overview of the patient. These agents prioritize information to reduce cognitive load on staff and improve situational awareness. The solution runs across the entire cloud-edge continuum (including on-premise) with low latency and in strict compliance with European health data regulations.

Public safety (BOS)

Document intelligence for strict security requirements

Emergency response organizations work with complex technical and contractual documents that must be processed under strict security protocols.

→ We combine retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) with domain-specific vision models to process heterogeneous documents, including complex tables and scanned PDFs. Our AI agents actively navigate document structures to extract and prioritize attributes, with all data remaining on a secure, locally controlled infrastructure.

Robotics

Natural language programming

Traditional robot programming is rigid, time-consuming, and requires specialized code.

→ We enable the programming and control of robots through voice or text input. Our AI agent systems use large language models in combination with image and sound processing to translate human intentions into executable robot actions, enabling rapid adaptation of production lines without manual reprogramming.

Research projects and collaborations

»Agent in the loop«

The Research and Innovation Center for Hybrid AI is one of eight Fraunhofer Heilbronn Research and Innovation Centers (HNFIZ) established with the support of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation. Together with Fraunhofer IAO, Fraunhofer IAIS is developing self-learning agents: from “human in the loop” to “agent in the loop.”

Collaboration in the field of agentic AI

At the Lamarr Institute, we are conducting research in collaboration with Fraunhofer IML, TU Dortmund University, and the University of Bonn in the field of Agentic AI. As one of Germany's central AI competence centers, the Lamarr Institute is shaping a new generation of AI that is powerful, sustainable, trustworthy, and secure, contributing to the solution of fundamental challenges in business and society.
